Grapes shown to protect heart

In a study on mice, including grapes in a daily diet lowered blood pressure and protected the heart from oxidative stress. A group of mice taking a common blood pressure lowering drug, did have lower blood pressure but did not have the protection against oxidation like the group fed grapes. The benefits may be the result of the phytochemicals – naturally occurring antioxidants – turning on a protective process in the genes that reduces damage to the heart muscle.

Loss of Liberties

"Brethren, let us think about that, because I say unto you with all the soberness I can, that we stand in danger of losing our liberties, and that once lost, only blood will bring them back; and once lost, we of this church will, in order to keep the church going forward have more sacrifices to make and more persecutions to endure than we have yet known, heavy as our sacrifices and grievous as our persecutions of the past have been."

Global Warming Science

Global Warming has been a hot political topic for several years now. Self-proclaimed Global Warming "guru", Al Gore, has done much to raise awareness about this debated topic. When politicians use doomsday scenarios to scare the public into draconian legislation, we should require even more scientific evidence than usual. Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, is full of spin of scientific evidence. It's wise to ponder the motives of the major players in instances like this.

The two loudest voices I have heard on Global Warming are Al Gore and the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Possible motives for these two groups include:

  • A sincere desire to improve the lives of the future inhabitants of our planet
  • Getting more camera time to further a political career
  • Increasing the power and control of the United Nations over sovereign nations

I'm not going to speculate on which motivations dominate the actions, but inspecting the actions can also bring to light the motivations. I have been keenly aware of the many scientists and professionals who have lost their jobs as a result of disagreeing with the politically correct view of global warming. The politically correct view derives mainly from Al Gore's movie and speeches and the IPCC's Climate Change report.

I find it interesting that even though the IPCC asked "600" scientists to review the pre-publication draft of the report, none of the dissenting views were permitted to be published. In contrast, a grass-roots coalition has had 31,478 scientists peer-review many different papers on climate change and reached a completely opposite conclusion than Al Gore and the IPCC. They found no evidence that atmospheric C02 levels have increased due to increased hydrocarbon use, but instead found naturally occuring cycles which account for the changes. And also that increases in CO2 actually benefit the environment.

If the true motivation is to improve the lives of future generations, then why not focus on:

  • Increasing free enterprise which has improved more lives than any other political system in the history of the world
  • Increasing personal freedoms which leads to greater happiness
  • Reducing actual man-made pollutants instead of naturally occurring CO2

Campaign for Liberty

Along with supporting free markets and a non-interventionist foreign policy, Campaign for Liberty champions personal freedom, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

Individual liberty and privacy are central to a free civilization, but are threatened by ambitious executives, activist judges, and unprincipled legislatures. In the name of national security, economic stability, and social engineering, government has eroded our liberties.

The Founders, who faced monumental perils, understood the moral importance of liberty and the need for checks on government power, even during war or crisis. They framed a Bill of Rights that prohibits the federal government from violating the freedom of speech, the press, religion, and assembly; the right to bear arms; freedom from unreasonable search and seizure; and the right of criminal suspects to due process. Unlisted rights are protected by the Ninth Amendment. The Tenth bars the federal government from acting beyond its listed Constitutional powers.

Campaign for Liberty defends the Bill of Rights and opposes the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, the Real ID Act, conscription, warrantless surveillance, abuses of habeas corpus, invasions of financial privacy, gun control, the war on drugs, and other measures that violate the Constitution and our individual liberties.

Visit www.CampaignForLiberty.com and help defend and promote our country’s traditional civil liberties.

Jury Duty Scam

My cousin, Eric Jorgenson (Chief Deputy District Attorney for Clark County, Nevada), emailed this information - and I thought I should pass it along.

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is included below).  Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book.  It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.  Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator.  If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.  Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado.  This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.  The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Will President Obama veto the value-added tax?  This would be a new federal income tax (25% rate) that will be added to all purchases.

Study shows vitamin supplements can help prevent cancer

The General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial was a randomized cancer prevention trial involving 29,584 participants conducted from 1985 to 1991. The trial tested the effects of supplements on the risk of esophageal and gastric cardia cancer on residents of Linxian, China, who have some of the highest cancer rates in the world. Treatment with "factor D," a combination of 50 µg selenium, 30 mg vitamin E, and 15 mg beta-carotene, led to decreased mortality from all causes, overall cancer and gastric cancer. In the present paper, researchers present results of 10-year follow-up after the end of the original trial.

From the beginning of the trial through May 2001, 9,727 deaths occurred, including 3,242 from cancer, 1,515 from esophageal cancer, and 1,199 from gastric cancer. 10 years after the end of the trial, participants who took factor D still had a 5% reduction in total mortality and 11% reduction in gastric cancer. The greatest benefit was observed among participants younger than 55 years old, who also experienced a 17% reduction in esophageal cancer.

The beneficial effects of selenium, vitamin E, and beta-carotene on mortality and cancer risk were still evident up to 10 years after completing the supplement trial and were consistently greater in younger participants. The results of the follow-up validate the original trial findings and indicate that even short-term supplementation may result in long-term benefits.

Comment on New Stem Cell Regulations

On March 9, 2009, Barack Obama issued an executive order that overturned Bush's policy restricting public tax dollars from being used to fund research involving new embryonic stem cells taken from human embryos. All research using public

The public comment period on the new NIH (National Institutes of Health) draft guidelines to open federal funding for research on human embryonic stem cells (ESCR) ends on May 26, 2009. NIH encourages comments to be entered on-line at:
http://nihoerextra.nih.gov/stem_cells/add.htm

As you comment, consider the following points:

    * I oppose killing human embryos. The proposed regulations will force taxpayers like me to fund research I believe is unethical because it requires the killing of human embryos.
    * Expanding funding to new human embryonic stem cell lines will divert federal funds away from promising research that is treating people now with non-embryonic stem cells and will also divert funds away from other sources of embryonic-like stem cells that have been generated without the use of human embryos.
    * The proposed regulations create a financial incentive for the creation of more human embryos to be destroyed to obtain their embryonic stem cells.
    * The guidelines do not require any separation between an IVF doctor and an ESCR researcher. The guidelines say they "should" be separate, but only when practicable. The guidelines allow any IVF doctor to create more embryos than are needed for fertility purposes in order to generate more so-called "leftover" embryos for ESCR research using taxpayer funds.
    * Instead of preventing any future expansion of funding for ESCR on unethical experiments involving human clones and human-animal hybrids, these regulations open the door for such funding upon the order of NIH.
    * The guidelines do not require full informed consent for the parents of the human embryos so that they understand that their options include permission for infertile couples to adopt them.
    * The media has also reported much success by researchers using non-embryonic/adult stem cells which do not kill human embryos.

Heroism in the Media

A Harley rider is passing the zoo when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back, letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A New York Times reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter says, "Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life." The biker replies, "Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right."

The reporter says, "Well, I'm a journalist from the New York Times, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page... so, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?"

The biker replies, "I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican."

The following morning the biker buys The New York Times to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on front page:

"U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH."

Happy Mother's Day

"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." -Margaret Thatcher

Here is an example of explaining why socialism won't work from an economics professor at  Texas Tech . . . When I was teaching economics I would simply draw a wagon on the chalk board with people riding in the wagon and people pulling the wagon and I would ask the students what happens when there is more riding than pulling?  The answer is obvious, the wagon stops.  It is the same with an economic system.  Someone has to pull the wagon.

Condensed Version of "In Mine Own Way" by President Marion G. Romney

As our modern societies follow the course which led to the fall of Rome and other civilizations which succumbed to the deceptive lure of the welfare state and socialism, I think it not inappropriate for me to emphasize again the Lord’s plan for the temporal salvation of His mortal children.

To emphasize the contrast between the Lord’s plan and some of the absurd practices of our day, I shall read a clipping or two from my miscellaneous file.

Swine Flu Trends

Last weekend I decided to experiment with some of Google's web tools. I used Google Sites to create a free new website called Swine Flu Trends. I used Google Docs to create the chart below from a Google Spreadsheet. I setup Google Analytics to track the number of visitors to the site. I used Google Webmaster Tools to submit the new site to the Google Search Engine. I applied for a Google Adsense account to see how that all works. I added a blog to the site using Google's Blogger. And finally, to make it all look official, I purchased the www.swineflutrends.com domain name from NetFirms for $6.99 for one year. Google makes some very slick tools to quickly create a decent website.

 Confirmed Swine Flu Cases Worldwide

As far as the Swine Flu goes, many experts say that it is less dangerous than the annual flu outbreak, but still the rate at which it is spreading worldwide is quite fast.

Benefits of 100% Fruit Juice

A new study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows that people who drink 100% fruit juice were leaner, had better insulin sensitivity, lower levels of blood glucose, lower levels of fasting triglycerides, higher HDL-cholesterol (good), and lower blood pressure than their non-juice drinking peers. Whenever you buy juice at a grocery store, make sure that it says 100% juice.

US more socialist than Sweden?

When the Saab Company asked the Swedish government for help due to the financial crisis, the Swedish government refused saying, "The Swedish state is not prepared to own car factories."

Are we more socialist in the US when our government jumps at the chance to own failing car companies like General Motors? Is the government smarter than the market in determining which companies should survive?

According to its last annual testing of vehicles, Consumer Reports recommended 100% of Subaru vehicles, 95% of Hondas, 89% of Toyotas, and 70% of Fords. Only 17% of GM cars and 0% of Chryslers were recommended. It sounds like the US taxpayers were forced to make one of the worst automotive investments possible.

US declares public health emergency for swine flu

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napilotano declared today a public health emergency over the recent outbreak of swine flu in Mexico. So far, there are over 1,000 suspected cases in Mexico, 20 confirmed cases in the US, and 6 confirmed cases in Canada. The US government has a website at http://www.pandemicflu.gov/ to publish updates about possible pandemics.

Has your representative co-sponsored HR 1207?

HR 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009 , is critical for us to maintain a representative government where the people have visibility into how our government functions. Without this transparency, corruption and waste will flourish.

The last time I checked, there were 91 co-sponsors of this important legisltation! Is your representative one of them?  Click here to find out!

Ultrasound images with a smartphone

Engineers at Washington University in St. Louis have created a small ultrasound probe which connects via USB to a Windows Smartphone to display ultrasound images. This breakthrough, made possible from a $100,000 grant from Microsoft, will revolutionize portable scanning in third world countries and may allow anyone to purchase one for home use in the future.
